Abel Guzman, HSLC Executive Director

I have dedicated my life and career to the care and welfare of animals. I began my journey in 2001 when I started working at Ruidoso Animal Clinic. My first role was as a kennel boy, where I handled basic care and cleaning, but I was eager to learn more. Under the mentorship of Dr. Willard, I gradually took on more responsibilities. Over the next ten years, I immersed myself in every aspect of the clinic, from assisting with veterinary procedures to supporting clients and ensuring that each animal received the best possible care. That experience taught me not only technical skills but also the importance of compassion, patience, and professionalism in serving both animals and their owners.

In 2011, I was offered the opportunity to become Shelter Manager at the Humane Society of Lincoln County. Accepting this position allowed me to continue pursuing my passion while serving the community I care deeply about. In that role, I was responsible for overseeing daily shelter operations, managing adoptions and intakes, supervising staff, and maintaining high standards of animal care. I worked to improve the shelters processes and create a positive environment for both animals and the people looking to adopt them.

In 2019, I was promoted to Operations Manager. This expanded my leadership to include not just the shelter but also the Humane Society’s resale shop and broader administrative functions. Over time, I focused on strengthening programs, improving efficiency, and building relationships with supporters, volunteers, and community partners.

In 2024, I was honored to be appointed Executive Director of the Humane Society of Lincoln County. In this role, I oversee the organization’s overall mission and strategy. My work includes managing operations, securing funding, developing new programs, and advocating for animal welfare throughout Lincoln County and beyond.

My passion for animals has been a constant in my life, guiding me in every step of my career. From my earliest days cleaning kennels to leading an organization dedicated to saving lives, I have always believed that animals deserve compassion, respect, and protection. Today, I remain committed to helping the Humane Society of Lincoln County grow, expand its impact, and continue providing care and hope to the animals and families in our community.

Chris Shows, Shelter Manager

I have been the Shelter Manager here at HSLC since April 2021. I am originally from Ruidoso. I have had dogs all my life, from my first Doberman, Eva, to my current two Chihuahua mix boys, Hank and Roscoe. I’m currently taking classes to become a Vet Assistant. I love working with animals and helping them find furever homes. I have enjoyed learning about animal behavior and proper animal care, and helping new pet parents learn what is needed to care for their new family member.
