HSLC policies below addressing adoptions, euthanasia, relinquish and return to owner.
Adoptions:
- Potential pet adopters must complete an adoption application prior to meeting any available animals. This information will help the staff understand history, lifestyle, pet expectations, home, etc.
- We recommend bringing young children (8 and younger) and/or other household pets to meet the potential candidate for adoption.
- Permission of landlord is required if adoptee lives in a rental property.
- The animal adoption fee includes vaccinations, de-worming, microchip, small bag of food and 30 days of insurance. Adoption fees are non-refundable; the new owner is responsible for on-going care and/or vaccinations through a local vet. Adoption fees are $75 for dogs and $65 for cats. The HSLC has ongoing specials, so be sure to inquire.
- All animals adopted through HSLC will be spayed or neutered if not already done. A time and date for procedure will be provided to new owner prior to leaving the shelter
- New Owners should also pick up Lincoln County license at time of adoption.
Euthanasia:
- Lincoln County Humane Society does not euthanize for lack of space or length of time spent at our facility. We have very strict guidelines for the performance of euthanasia; only animals found to have serious health conditions that are deemed not treatable, are severely contagious, are suffering from a previous injury or animals that show serious signs of aggression and pose a threat to other animals or the public will be considered for euthanasia. In other words, we make every attempt to provide care and find suitable homes for as many animals as possible.
- HSLC is committed to taking in all homeless dogs and cats from local municipalities or owner-surrender situations. If the shelter is full, we work with other shelters in New Mexico and Colorado to transfer animals and support successful adoption rates.
- We work with the public and volunteers to foster animals during times of a full shelter or other emergency situations.
Relinquish
- All relinquished animals must be brought in by the owner.
- If the animal is sick, injured, has a recent bite history, has aggressive behavior, etc. the shelter staff handing the intake may inform the owner that the animal is not likely to be considered for adoption (and therefore, potential euthanization). This will provide the owner an opportunity to re-home on their own.
Return to Owner
- Owners claiming a stray animal must provide evidence of ownership including pictures, proof of rabies, licensing and/or medical records.
- All Lincoln County animals must have a current city license tag.
