National Rescue Dog Day    May 20th

Brings awareness to the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters around the country who deserve a second chance at a forever home.  Rescue dogs are truly remarkable! They overcome extreme obstacles and are incredibly resilient. They make wonderful family pets and a child’s best friend. With training, they contribute to the independence of people with disabilities, give comfort to the elderly and be emotional support companions. The possibilities are endless, but most of all, they are love in the purest form and it is hard to imagine a more loyal, worthy companion.

SHARE ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA – POST A PHOTO: Share a photo of your rescue dog on social media by sending the Humane Society of Lincoln Co. a message on Facebook. Explain what makes your rescue dog special to inspire others to adopt!

GIVE LOVE: Shower your rescue dog with love in the form of a leisurely walk, a delicious treat, a new toy, or just some extra cuddle time.

ADOPT: Adopt a dog from a local shelter.

FOSTER: Provide a temporary home for a rescue dog. Many dogs abandoned to shelters benefit from socialization, or would just thrive better away from the shelter environment. This is also a great way to see if you’re ready to adopt and make the life-long commitment.

HELP A SHELTER: Check your local shelter website to donate and to view their wish list of much needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. You can also host a bake sale, car wash, or other event and donate the proceeds back to the shelter.

VOLUNTEER: Help at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization.

SPAY/NEUTER: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist.

EDUCATE: Teach young children the importance of kindness, unconditional love, and responsible care of all animals.

National Dog Bite Prevention

How to protect yourself during a dog attack

  1. Be alert and aware of your surroundings.
  2. Stay Calm and Avoid Eye Contact.
  3. If the dog approaches you, Back Away Slowly.
  4. Use a Barrier like a tree, car, or other surrounding objects.
  5. Avoid running away.

It is important to remember that even well-trained and well-behaved dogs can bite if they are put into the wrong situation. Addressing and avoiding these situations is key to reducing dog bites, and not focusing on unrelated factors such as a dog’s breed or appearance. Our companion dogs are ultimately our responsibility, as are their actions. By keeping them safe, healthy, and happy, we can keep people safe as well.

Remember ….. Any dog can bite.

By Fostering a homeless animal, you are providing rehabilitation in a nurturing environment and providing needs skills for their adoption into a loving home.

WHY I FOSTER Hello all.  My name is Paula Lorraine Pavanis, I volunteer at Lincoln County Humane Society, and I also foster.  I find that fostering enriches my life, and hopefully the life of our animals in myriad ways.

Fun It’s akin to grand-parenting.  Like kids, many animals are quirky and spark joy. All the parenting (animal or human) skills acquired over decades condensed into caretaking, loving, entertaining, and some training: all without the headache of wondering how to manage the next 10 years.

Freeing Without the stress of managing something 10 years out, true creativity in the day to day round can shine, bring out the best, and create a sense of freedom and joy for both of us.

Philanthropic Philio-…it means love. Fostering assists the community, both animal and human, in meeting and exceeding the standards of ethical humane care necessary for a well functioning unit overall.  It relieves suffering.  One: during the time an animal is fostered, it relieves some burden, both financial and staffing, on the shelter.  Two: assists in preparing animals for re-homing by providing the much-needed sense of security many frightened animals need.   Three: It fosters connection. Loneliness is rampant in today’s society, and often hidden.  It’s an issue the medical community and policy makers are now aware of.  Hands down, those who care for animals report feeling less lonely.  While not directly causal, caring for an animal lengthens the health-span of life.  It’s a loving, winning combination for both. Give it a go.

Many Thanks to Paula –
