Dog Walkers are a group of volunteers who do many things and offer opportunities to folks of differing physical capabilities and interests. To join you must be 18 years of age OR you must be supervised by an adult. Must have a valid ID present when filling out and applying for a volunteer position at the HSLC shelter. This means families are welcome to volunteer! Among the things these volunteers do:

  • Walk dogs on the path near the shelter (20 minute walks (most vigorous activity)
  • Walk small dogs or senior dogs just around the shelter (low level activity)
  • Socialize puppies (group activity that requires no walking (most fun)
  • Walk dogs and man the Humane Society float in local parades
  • Take dogs to the dog park
  • Take dogs to off-site adoption events (very important and exciting)

Another opportunity – and equally important – that is wonderful for folks who aren’t up for walks:

  • Cuddle cats
  • Socialize kittens

This group also provides general support for the humane society by:

  • Assisting in fundraising activities – don’t miss the jewelry they make for sale at the resale shop
  • Doing radio spots
  • Assisting at the annual low cost shot clinics

We will train and mentor new folks (a handbook is in the works) so you will be sure to become a valued member of the team. If you are interested, think you might be interested, or just have questions please contact the shelter at (575) 257-9841 or email our shelter manager for inquiries/more information at sheltermgr@hslcnm.org.
